"I Have Seen My Death!": The Mysterious Night That Changed Medicine Forever
On a cold Friday evening in November 1895, in a dimly lit laboratory at the University of Würzburg, a quiet German physicist named Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was conducting routine experiments with vacuum tubes. He was testing electrostatic charges when suddenly, something inexplicable happened.
Across the darkened room, a small cardboard screen coated with barium platinocyanide began to emit a faint, glowing shimmer. Röntgen turned off the electrical current; the glow stopped. He turned it back on; the mysterious green shimmer returned.
Röntgen knew that normal light couldn't penetrate the heavy black cardboard covering his tube. Yet, an invisible force was passing right through it. He didn't know what these strange rays were, so he temporarily named them using the mathematical symbol for the unknown: "X-Rays."

Obsessed with his discovery, Röntgen barely left his lab for weeks. He ate and slept among his instruments, determined to understand the limits of these invisible rays. He began placing various objects between the tube and the screen—wood, paper, thin metals. Then, while holding a small piece of lead, he froze in shock. For the first time in human history, a man saw his own skeleton flickering back at him on the screen.
The Fearful Moment: Anna Bertha's Reaction
To capture permanent proof, Röntgen needed a human subject for a photographic print. On December 22, 1895, he asked his wife, Anna Bertha Ludwig, to place her left hand on a photographic plate for 15 long minutes while exposing it to the rays.
When the image developed, it clearly revealed the bone structure of her fingers, surrounded by a subtle shadow of flesh, with two dark rings resting on her ring finger. Looking at the eerie, ghostly print of her own living bones, Bertha gasped in terror and famously exclaimed:
Despite her initial fear, this terrifying moment marked the dawn of modern medical imaging, allowing doctors to look inside the human body for the very first time without surgery.
A Hero Who Refused to Profit
In 1901, Röntgen was awarded the very first Nobel Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking work. However, unlike many inventors, Röntgen was a true humanitarian. He refused to patent his discovery, firmly believing that scientific discoveries belonged to all of humanity and should be used freely by doctors worldwide.
