 What Is the Bloemencorso?

The Bloemencorso Bollenstreek is an annual flower parade that traces a 42-kilometre route through the heart of the Dutch tulip district. Unlike most parades that last a few hours in a single city, this one spans an entire region — from Noordwijk through the colourful bulb fields, past Lisse and the iconic Keukenhof gardens, all the way to Haarlem.

Every float is built entirely from real, fresh flowers — no artificial materials allowed. Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and dozens of other bulb flowers are carefully attached by hand by volunteer teams working through the night. The result is a moving gallery of living art that has no equal anywhere in the world.

 The 42km Route: Town by Town

Part of what makes the Bloemencorso so unique is that the parade comes to you. Spectators line the route in different towns and villages, each offering a different atmosphere and viewing experience.

 The Art Behind the Floats

Each float is the result of hundreds of hours of voluntary labour. Teams of dedicated flower artists — many from families that have participated for generations — begin attaching flowers just days before the parade. Working under time pressure because fresh flowers wilt quickly, they create astonishingly detailed sculptures, scenes, and characters using nothing but petals, stems, and bulbs.

A single float can contain over half a million individual flowers. The scale and delicacy of this work is something that photographs can capture, but only the human eye — standing close to a passing float — can truly appreciate.

Dress in layers. April in the Netherlands can be cold in the morning and surprisingly warm by afternoon. Rain is always possible. A light waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes are essential.
